Last Shark
Last Shark is a deliberately absurd genre mash-up from true one-man operation Taichiro Natsume, who wrote, shot, directed, and stars in the film with DIY determination and zero interest in restraint. A sharp parody of Japanese psychic investigation TV and bottom-tier YouTube paranormal channels, the film follows the ramshackle crew of Psychic Investigation Big Summer as they’re tasked with analyzing video footage said to capture supernatural activity.
Their investigation sends Momoka and Natsume undercover into a suspicious yoga circle that may–or may not–be a cult. It absolutely is. What they uncover is Daiwa-Jin, a fanatical group worshipping a giant alligator and plotting nothing less than the destruction of all humanity. From there, the story nosedives into escalating chaos: end-of-the-world conspiracies, a land-walking shark, an enormous alligator that does not resemble the likeness of Godzilla in any way, and of course – an epic battle between the two.
As reality collapses around them, Momoka and Natsume must somehow stop the apocalypse, defeat Daiwa-Jin, and save the planet. Along the way, Natsume falls in love with Momoka’s sister, a recovering cult member who forgot everything from her previous life and is just about ready to get it on with anybody, including friends and family… Shot with raw enthusiasm and powered by pure commitment to nonsense, Last Shark wears its handmade insanity proudly–a seriously silly, audience-pleasing cult film that knows exactly how ridiculous it is and charges forward anyway.
