After hearing that his close friend and fellow military veteran attempted suicide, George raises awareness for military member suicides by hiking the full 2,200 mile Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia. He finds support and comfort from fellow hikers, civilians, and military veterans alike in the "Hiker Universe", an adventurous subculture of hikers that revel in the common purpose and unspoken meaning of life that drives them down the trail and over the next peak.
